Foreign Miscellany.
It is said that a "Lean Men's Association" is about forming in Hackensack. Crawling through a key-hole is the first step in the initiation ceremonies.
The following questions belongs to the mixed mathematics, and a great many people have got mixed up in trying to solve it: "If three cats kill three rats in three minutes, how many cats will it take to kill one hundred cats in fifty minutes?" The answer is, six cats.
An informal meeting of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday with regard to the Fiji Islands. Winters is en route to Washington as representative of the Polynesian Society, to solicit the protectorate of the United States.
There is a Colorado romance that seven miners, exploring the mountains, found an enormous chunk of gold. They fought for its possession till all were killed but one. It was too heavy for him to carry off, so he sat down beside it and starved to death.
Wisconsin will take the lead in the manufacture of beet sugar, several factories being now in process of erection. They say they can make sugar from beets that can't be told from cane sugar.
It is a curious fact that oranges, brought hundreds of miles from beyond sea, sell in New York at less than half the price of apples, of the same size, which grow almost at our very doors.
GLYCERINE FOR BRUNS. - Glycerine, as an application to burns, is recommended. Through the explosion of a spirit lamp the greater portion of a face had been covered with rather deep burns, which healed in a week by the immediate and often-repeated application of glycerine, without producing blisters or festering, or leaving any scar.
THE GREATEST OF BORES. - The Mont Cenis tunnel will be finished this year, 10,598 metres have been excavated, leaving only 1,621 metres (less than one mile) to be done. Meanwhile, such improvements have been made in engines and cars for very steep grades that the railway over the mountain may prove to be quite as economoical, and quite as safe and comfortable, as the railway through it.
NOVEL BUSINESS. - The Government of India has bought 2,000 copies of a novel, a given £100 to its author, a Government Officer; but this novel in a vernacular language is a novel for native ladies, written for the purpose of promoting the cause of female education, and so the Government thinks it discharges a duty in encourgaing "The Bride's Mirror."
We clip this from the Washington Chronicle: "The typo who was dismissed from the New York Herald office for too truthfully making the editor call that city New Cork, has, it seems, found a place on the World. His last exploit was to make a democratic leader, in a legislative speech reported in that paper, speak of the masses of his party as 'them asses,' showing him as true representative, even in grammar. That compositor plainly knows the party."
The English Royal Humane Society has given its silver medal this year to Lord Walter Kerr, commander of the Hercules, iron-clad. One of his men fell overboard in the Tagus, and, striking his head into the chains, was stunned. Lord Kerr, seeing that he could not be saved if he waited for a boat to be lowered, sprang from the bulwark of the ship - a height of thirty feet - into the stream, and swam to the seaman, whom he succeeded in holding above water for ten minutes of terrible endurance until the ship's boat reached them and took up the commander and his man nearly dead.
A Joliet, Ill., clergyman, Mr. Jenkins, has issued a circular announcing that arrangements have been completed whereby, during the coming summer, clergymen of all denominations can procure for themselves, and member of their families, excursion tickets from Chicago to San Francisco and return. These tickets will be sold at $118 for the round trip. They will be sold only at the Chicago office of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. They will be issued, to persons properly accredited, from June 15 to July 15. Each ticket will be good for sixty days from the date of its issue, and permission will be given to break the journey on the return, to visit Salt Lake City or other places.
STREET SONGS IN PARIS. - An English paper says: Not less than twenty-seven thousand penny song books are being sold every day throughout France. What is still more surprising, is the immense number of persons engaged in the trade. It is custom for a man or a family of beggars to procure the song books and tramp the whole country round, singing the songs in them. This attracts a good deal of attention, and then they sell the little books. The singers in France number as high as eight hundred thousand. They may be dividied into three great orders: those at fixed posts, tramps who wander about and sing in the streets, and those who frequent the low eating houses. The song book which has been sold the most if the one containing the Femme a Barbe which Theresa made notorious. This song, however, is of German origin.
LAKE TUNNELS. - A decided impetus has latterly been given to the tunneling business, and no less than a dozen or more bores are under way or being projected. The success of the Chicago Lake Tunnel, in supplying the city with fresh water, causes the people of Cleveland to be very sanguine as to the results of a similar work now being carried forward for furnishing them with Lake Erie water. The Cleveland Tunnel, now commenced and to be completed in 1872, is to extend under the bed of the lake for the distance of a mile and a quarter in a straight line at right angles from the shore. It is to be elliptical, with a horizontal diameter of four feet, and a vertical diameter of five feet two inches. During the past year the plans of the work have been completed, the soundings made, the shore shaft finished, and the tunnel excavated for a distance of 120 feet. In the coming spring, the crib is to be placed at the lake end of the tunnel, and the shaft sunk, so that the excavations can advance from both extremities and meet in the middle. It is estimated that the tunnel will cost $300,000, necessitate the removal of 220,000 cubic feet of clay, and employ in its construtions over 2,000,000 of bricks.
