Ka Nupepa Kuokoa

KE KILOHANA POOKELA NO KA LAHUI HAWAII.

KE KUOKOA, HONOLULU, MEI 14, 1870.

English Column.

Foreign Miscellany.

The British naval squadron in the Pacific consists of ten vessels and 1,96@ men; that of the West Indies, 23 ships and 3,545 men.

Horse flesh is still sold in Paris. In the months of September, October and November, 1869, were sold 273,200 lbs. from 683 horses killed for the purpose.

A custom in Paris is to allow mendicants to beg in the streets on New Year’s Day. It was ascertained there were more than 2,000, and the sum obtained by them 52,000 francs.

The United States Commissioner of Agriculture has issued a report, in which he states that the continued high price of cotton has @ its culture more profitable than at any other former period.

Professor Davidson, of the United States Coast Survey, has discovered a mountain @ of @ in Alaska, convenient to the sea coast. The range is 2,000 feet high and of @ extent.

The Archbishop Primate of Hungary, who is the richest primate in Christendom, the @ has L800,000 of rents, has re@ from his Holiness the announcement @ elevation to Cardinal.

At Natal, while the 20 th Regiment were @ a thunder storm came in, fourteen men of the company were struck by lightning. One man was killed and his rifle @; four of the men were sent to hospital.

An earthquake was felt in Balse at noon on the 28 th of February, and the people were greatly alarmed. The shocks were wave like and accompanied by a rolling noise. A second shock was felt at seven o’clock next morning.

The present Earl of Derby is disposing of his father’s stud, just as the late Earl disposed of his father’s menagerie. The mares @ and Inspiration brought 1,000 and @ guineas respectively. Thirty horses @ sold for 4,840 guineas.

@ the elephant is made serviceable @ a giant plough. The implement is @ by two men, and turns up a huge @ and forms a furrow three feet deep by @ and a half feet wide at the top. This is the deepest sub sod ploughing we have any account of.

We called attention sometime ago in our columns to the remarkable conversion of the Queen of Madagascar and many of her subjects to Christianity. She ordered all the @ to be destroyed in the Royal temples; but declined to make it compulsory in private @, preferring to leave it to the influence of the Holy Spirit.

Mr. Cross, naturalist, of Mason street, Liverpool, lately had a consignment of serpents from the West Indies, and among them a female python, which, whilst on its passage, gave birth to thirty-five young ones. One of the large serpents burrowed into a stable and coiled itself round a horse. The animal freed itself by eating the head of the serpent.

OXEN FROM THE POCKET.—“Whitehead’s @ Essence of Beef” is a new Australian preparation, in which the nutritious matter of an ox is condensed into nine pounds of compact substance. Thirty pounds of beef are concentrated into one pound of little cakes, each about as large as a silver dollar, and weighing half an ounce. One of these cakes will make a bowl of good beef-tea.

A WIRE FROM ENGLAND TO AUSTRALIA.—The British Australian Telegraph Company are about laying a cable of 563 miles from Singapore to Batavia, where it will join the Dutch line which crosses to the southeastern extremity of Java, from which point another cable of 1,163 miles is to be laid to Port Darwin. A land line of about 800 miles will connect this with the Australian colonies. There is already a continuous line from England to Singpore.

Many precious stones are now found in Australian gold diggings. Beside diamonds, what is call gem sand had been found in considerable quantities in the Cud@gong River. It contains stones of different colors, and when placed under a glass sparkles with diamonds of minute form, valued at L600 per ounce. A company obtained in a few days 119 diamonds, one of them—the largest hitherto found in that part of the world—weighing upwards of 5 ½ carats. It is describe as a perfect octahedron, and will scarcely require any polishing in the hands of a lapidary. It is now in London.

The trial of Prince Pierre Bonaparte for a murder of the editor, Noir, has resulted in acquittal, evidently to the astonishment of Paris. That there was some provocation @ anger was proved, but making charitable allowance for this the killing was still murder, and the acquittal is a disgrace to French justice. At the close of the criminal prosecution a civil action was brought against the Prince in the interest of Noir’s family, for @00,000 francs damages and a verdict for @,000 francs allowed. The reports of this trial exhibit the French people in a most ludicrous light. The proceedings in court were hardly on a level with our police courts; the accused was constantly rising and denouncing witnesses and the opposing counsel as liars and slanderers; Rochefort, who was present as a witness, acted like an insane man, branded the prisoner as an assassin in open court, and had to be sent to jail ten days for contempt. As a whole the trial was without dignity, decorum or decency.

The new Your correspondent of the @eton Journal describes a new invention @ displacing steam by electricity, and @ that lathes, planning machines, and other mechanical arrangements are driven by this power. To run  an engine of twenty-horsepower by this invention would require only @ space of three feet long, two feet wide, and @ feet high. The cost per day would be @rty-file cents. On a steamship no coal would be required, and the space now used for coal and machinery could be used for cargo. The stubborn resistance of electricity @ mechanical use hitherto fore has, it is believed, been overcome. A continuous batter has been secured and other difficulties removed, principally through the coil of the magnet. If the invention works as well on a large scale as it does on the machinery @ which it is now applied, steamships will ply the ocean under the new propelling power. A machine of great capacity is being constructed and will soon be on exhibition in New York. The whole thing, mighty enough to carry a Cunarder to Liverpool, can be stored in a small trunk.
