Voyage to the Marquesas Is.
{We extract the following paragraphs from the Report of Rev. J.F. Pogue to the Hawaiian Board. The record of the twenty-onedyas recently spent by him on the Marquesas Is. as Missonary Delegate give a variety of light and shade which is doubtless a true reflection of the state of our missionary work on that Group.}
Ua@ou. March 27th - A delightful Sabbath morning. There are no people living in the immediate vacinity of Kauwealoha ʻ s house. After prayers, and breakfast we prepared to go over to the next valley Hakahekau, say 1-1/2 to 2 miles to church.
The church here is a very neat one. The most so of any on the Islands. It is built of boards. Thatched with Cocoa leaf. Having a floor of stones upon which is spread a covering made of split bamboo which gives a it a neat appearance. This house is 24 feet long, 13 feet wide and 7 feet high, with 5 windows and 1 door. It has benches all around it. also a table and two chairs. The house is well adapted for the purpose for which it is used. In the morning, I preached. Kaiwi followed with my sermon in Marquesan. After which Kauwealoha made some remarks, and the meeting was closed. The Sabbath School then began. Verses from different parts of the Scripture were recited by all present. there were about 48 persons present at the morning service. After a short recess the people came together again to observe the Lord ʻ s Supper. 20 Communicants were present from five or six different nations. The Lord was with us. It was good to be there. The Pastor of the Church presided, and was aided by Kaiwi. After the communion I made some remarks exhorting them to brotherly love, to give of their substance for the spread of the gospel, and to have their children educated for the Lord. The meeting being dismissed Kaiwi, and myself returned on foot to Hakauahi. The first Sabbath spent with churches of Nuuhiva. A sabbath to be long remembered.
March 29th. - Early this morning Kauwealoha , and Kaiwi left for the brig to bring Kauwealohaʻs things ashore. The returned about 11oʻclock, soon after the Capt., came. And the eight Pupils of the school dressed in new calico seated themselves around the room with Kahili their teacher. Kauwealoha commenced the examination by requesting Kaiwi to pray. The pupils were examined in the Pi-a-pa - Spelling. Reading in the Gospel of John - Helu kamalii. They were also asked questions on the Old Testament History, and from the Catechism. They then sang several hymns and recited together the Lordʻs prayer. I made some remarks to the school. Kaiwi followed and also the Captain. The pupils did very well. The teachers must have spent much time, and labor in drilling them. He could not but contrast these girls well dressed, obedient to their teachers, kind to each other, healthy, and clean in person with those who were standing about the door with no clothes, but a maro filthy in appearance, rough and boisterous in manners. May the Lord add power to the instruction of these teachers, and give them to see souls from among their pupils converted to God. We now dined, and madepreparation to go to the vessel at Hakahekau. Having united in singing a parting hymn, and prayer, we left Hakanahi hoping soon to meet again.
At the house of Kauwealoha I met a cheif by name Makohi a friend of Kauwealoha, who thinks he is a good man. This Makohi has a son who has been with Kauwealoha from the time he first commenced the boys school. he is a fine boy, Kauwealoha has a good deal of confidence in the boy, desired him to go to the school at Puamau. The father has given his consent, but the boy weeping says he cannot go. He is afraid they will kill, and eat him there. His companion in the school consents to go to Puamau, and we will take him with us on the vessel. Makohi is also to go with us on to Fatuhiva.
About 4oʻclock the anchor was taken up, and we sailed for Taihae, Nuuhiwa.
