Ka Nupepa Kuokoa
KE KILOHANA POOKELA NO KA LAHUI HAWAII.
English Column.
We take the following article from the February number of the "Mission Field." published by the "Society for the Propagation of the Gospel." London:
Hawaii.
The Rev. T. Harris, S. P. G. Missionary, who writes from Honolulu, seems to have infused new life into our work in that city. He has formed Bible classes--one of native men, and another of women. In the latter, Queen Emma acted as his interpreter; for, having only arrived in July last, he had not acquired the language with enough accuracy to be independent of such help. He reports that the native boys' school had doubled in numbers since his settlement in Honolulu, and had obtained an increased grant of 361. from the Hawaiian Board of Education; that the native offertory had also doubled, and that a number of catechumens were anxiously awaiting the return of the Bishop for confirmation. Mr. Harris asks his Lordship's permission, being"fit, and desirous of being confirmed." Queen Emma herself writing to the Bishop, now in England, begs him not to return without the means of redesigning the building of the cathedral. We are glad to find, while speaking on this subject, that the venerable S. P. C. K., has granted 100l. to this object. Honolulu is becoming more and more a place of call, and next year steamers will run between San Francisco and Australia, touching there and at New Zealand, and in correspondence with the new line of railway between New York and the California coast. It is most important that, with a continued influx of white settlers attracted thither, as well as of the floating maritime element, England and her Church should be fitly represented.
The female industrial schools at Lahaina as well as at Honolulu, under the care of Sisters of Mercy, are as highly appreciated as every by the people. They are "fully to overflowing." More buildings are absolutely needed. Lahaina has been the educational colony of the Mission, so to say. Here is the boys' boarding and day school together, numbering near 100 of the most promising youths of the kingdom, all taught in English.
Archdeacon Mason, writing from this town, says that there, too, fresh dormitories must be erected, while the condition of his Church, a wooden shed, not even capable of being made waterproof, is greatly against his success. The neighbourhood is exceedingly poor, and without help from home can hardly be expected to build a suitable stone fabric.
The Rev. G. B. Whipple, S. P. G. Missionary at Wailuku, priest of the American church, who has been in part maintained by its alms, reports fresh openings of usefulness and accessions of support, especially in the valueable co-operation and liberality of American sugar planters in his neighbourhood.
With regard to the Mission in Kona (where Captain Cook perished,) in Hawaii, under the Rev. C. G. Williamson, it will be remembered that the district was visited last year with fearful earthquakes; still Mr. Williamson's church, school, and house were not thrown down; and according to a letter recently published in the "Net," he was having a reasonable amount of success. Queen Emma had been visiting the neighbourhood, and rode twenty-four miles on horseback to attend Divine Service. The need of Christian influences and better education in this district will be illustrated by a tragedy which recently occurred there, and excited no little fear among the while settlers scattered up and down.
A native called Kaona declared himself a prophet inspired by the old heathen gods to establish the faith and upset the existing Government. He drew a body of natives after him, as fanatical as himself, and when summoned by the sheriff, an Englishman named Neville, to surrender for the disturbance, they seized him, and with clubs cruelly beat him to death, having first allowed him to witness the murder in cool blood of his chief officer. Mr. Neville was the great supporter of the Church in Kona, and a truly Christian man. The fanatics have been taken, and brought to Honolulu for trial. It is believed the murderers will be hanged. Yes! people make a great mistake when they say there are no heathens now (using the term in its literal sense) in Hawaii. In the country districts the old beliefs are strong. Christian schools alone can uproot them.
