FOREI GN NEWS.
By the Foreign Mail received on Monday we have important news from abroad.
The Impeachment Trial of the President o f the United States had about closed, and the verdict remained with the Senate, which wa s expected would be rendered within a few days.
If the Newspaper telegroms report correctly, a division of sentiment has occured among the Republican Senators in the matter of the conviction of the President, and his removal from office is yet uncertain. Our next advices will probably give the result of the Senate's decision as a jury.
The Herald's, May 2. - Dispatch says it is believed that if the President be removed the members of the Cabinet will refuse to quit, on the ground of the acting President no t being a Constitutional President, and ha s no right to remove them.
Eu ropean.
LONDON, May 1. - The debate in the House o f Commons last night, on Gladstone's resolution for the abolition of the Irish Church, wa s continued to a late hour. Some prominent members spoke. Gladstone closed the debate on the Liberal side with a powerful speech against the continuance of the Irish Church. He also defended himself from the personal attacks made upon him for his course, denying that he had any part or lot in the projects of either the Ritualists or the Roman Catholics.
Disraeli followed in a bitter speech, calling the scheme one of confiscation and violence, to which the people of England would ne ver consent.
A division then took place on the first resolution, which was adopted by 65 majority.
Disraeli said the Ministry needed time to consider what course they would take, and the House adjourned to Monday.
The Cabinet crisis monopolizes public attention. I t is thought that if the measures, whi ch are in effect approved by poth parties, a re not opposed by Liberals, the present Cabinet will not resign or dissolve Parliament.
LONDON, May 2.- The journals all comment on the vote of Gladstone's resolution. The Times says no one can deny the immense significance of the event. Since the mo tion to go into committee the Tories have gained three seats in the House of Commons, yet sixty majority has grown to sixtysix.
LONDON, May 3.- It is said, to-day, that Disraeli tendered his resignation yesterday, but it was not accepted.
LONDON, May 4. - Midnight. - There was a very full house at the opening session of the House of Commons to-night. After some unimpo rtant business Disraeli arose and was greeted with cheers from the Ministerial benches. He reviewed the course of the Tory a dministration which at its outset was wi thout a majority of supporters in the House; an d spoke of its uniform success. On Thusday la st, on the vote upon the first of a series o f resolutions, the Ministry encountered a new question, which threatened confusion to I reland and ultimately the overthrow of the English Church, the effects of which would be the absorption of all the Church of Rome. To this measure he could not assent, and had a sked the House for time to advise with the Queen on the new attitude of affairs. Her Ma jesty had heard his statement, and not onl y declined his resignation, but urged him no t to dissolve Paliament at present – an anamolou s circumstance, until an appeal could be made to the new constituents.
Mr. Gladstone said the Premier's praise of the tories was not only in bad taste, but unru, especially that portion respecting the finances. He laughed at the cry of danger of the estabisbed church and at that of the Church of Rome, also of other sects. It was unprecedented that the ministry which had been beaten by 65 majority, should talk of dissolving Parliament. It might be right to elect a new Parliament to settle the question of the Irish Church, but the first duty when chosen would be to settle the Ministry itself. Its previous course was unconstitutional.
John Bright said the Premier's statement would amaze the country. He asked the House to examine the usage and the Constitution that he might keep office by arts not the most worthy, and hold it by adopting dogmas which he had bitterly denounced Mr. Bright showed the inconsistency of the Tories. There were various differences of opinion among the members of the Cabinet. He said an a dverse suit was no disgrace to the Ministry, but to hold hoffice after such a vote, was. There was no reason why the constitutional practice be dispensed with in favor of Disraeli, who knew well enough that no Irish or Scotch Reform bill, not of a nature to suit the Irish or Scotch Liberals, could pass the House.
Disraeli fixed the 7th of May for the debate on the Irish question.
Starling intelligence has just been received from Australia. Prince Alfred, who is visiting Sydney, was shot and dangerously wounded by an unknown person.
LONDON, April 25th. - Particulars of the attempted assassination of Prince Alfred state that the culprit is and Irishman named Farrel known to be connected with the Fenian organization. He shot the Prince in the back on the 12th of March. The ball was not extracted for two days. The wound is dangerous an d painful, but the Prince is doing well, though his recovery will necessarily be slow. Un der medical advice he had sailed for En gland.
LONDON, April 28th. - Both Houses of Pa rliament to-night, without a dissenting voice, voted an address to the Queen upon the subject of the attempt to assassinate P rince Alfred expressing the sympathy of the British nation with the royal family in the untoward event, which has filled them with sorrow and the country with horror, and the hope that the Prince will soon be restored to heal th.
Advices from Sydney, Australia, say Farrell, who attempted to murder Prince Alfred, has been tried, found guilty and sentenced to death.
LONDON, April 26th. - Dipatches from Aby ssinia state that a battle was fought on Good Friday, before Magdala. King Theodore commanded in person, and was defeated. He was found dead.
