Ka Nupepa Kuokoa
KE KILOHANA POOKELA NO KA LAHUI HAWAII.
English Column.
Foreign Religious Items.
-The Bishop of Nova Scotia has dismissed Rev. J.C. Cochrane, a clergyman forty-two years in orders, for refusing to preach in his surplice.
-Our friends in Canada are earnestly engaged in gathering materials for a history of Congregationalism in all parts of British North America. This is a good work, and will blend happily with what is doing in the United States.
-A case arose in Italy under the new law, allowing priests to marry. A registrar in Genoa refused to issue the proper papers for a priest who wished to be married. The matter was carried into court, and the first decision was in favor of the registrar, but the higher court reversed it.
-There has been a powerful revival of religion in progress in Cumberland. Kilsyth, and other neighboring towns and villages in Scotland. These places have been wonderfully moved by the Spirit, resulting not only in many conversations, but in various reformations among the people, in respect to intemperance and the like.
-American Sunday Schools under the urgency of the American and Foreign Christian Union, are making heir way on the continent of Europe. In the city of Amsterdam, containing 250,000 inhabitants, the ting was at first opposed, with true Dutch obstinacy, but at last Sunday Schools were established in that city and are now very popular.
-Permission has been given by the French Imperial Commission, to the Bible Society of France, to have its stand in the park surrounding the Paris Exhibition. The Bible Committee of England propose to add their forces and to make the occasion for the wide distribution of the whole Bible or the New Testament in many different languages. It is thought that some 2,000,000 copies may thus be disposed of, and the sum of $30,000, is now being raised in England for this purpose.
-The first Russian Society has been recently organized to St. Petersburg with the sanction of the Emperor Alexander. It seems from a letter in the New York Observer, from Rev. W.E. Bidwell, that various attempts have been made before to organize such a society in Russia, but they have been failures. The society begins its career under happy auspices.
-The revival in Scotland, of which we have recently made mention, proves to be more extensive than we had supposed. It has reached almost every village all along the northeast coast. A few enterprising evangelists have had much to do with this, of whom if we mistake not, one is an American. It is said that this work has really been continuous progression what section ever since the year 1858. Whitefield ini his day, visited this same region, and saw many converted.
The Nation’s Curse.
The revenue commissioners of the U.S. estimate that there are annually consumed in the country 42,000,000 galleon of distilled spirits, 186,000,000 gallons of fermented liquors, and 10,000,000 galleons of imported liquors, the estimated cost of which is $500,000,000, on which the government derives an income of $47,727,276. This of course does not include the liquor smuggled into the country, nor the immense amount secretly manufactured, which would vastly increase the estimate; nor does it include the enormous loss annually sustained by labor and capital, the direct result of drinking habits, nor the suffering and vice directly caused by strong drink. These should be presented to make a correct balance sheet.
