English Column.
A Query
The Hawaiian Government four years ago hastened to follow the example of England and France in extending belligerent rights to the so-called Southern Confederacy. We do not suppose the history of the world was very materially affected by the act. But why should the Hawaiian Government still continue belligerent rights to a Confederacy that has ceased to exist, either in name or in imagination of its most enthusiastic admirers. Now that England and France have retraced the step they should have never taken, why may not Hawaii? Should the Shenandoah appear off Honolulu, is there any doubt in the Foreign Office as to the "rights" she may claim?
The News.
The most remarkable fact regarding the news of late is that there is very little that can be called remarkable.
A monument has been erected with great ceremony at Lowell, Mass., to the memory of Ladd and Whitney the two soldier-boys, for they were both young, who fell in Baltimore on the 19th of April, 1861, "a day babtized anew in the blood of the proto-martyrs of the Second Revolution, as it had been in the blood of those of the First."
A very important Convention of all the "Congregational" Churches of the United States was held in Boston in June. Over 500 delegates were present, many of them being leading minds in the nation. Such gatherings may not be much noticed by the politician, but they are in many cases more important than the noisy, pretentious "Assembly" or "Congress."
The Young Men's Christian Association has purchased Ford's Theatre where Lincoln was assassinated, for the sum of $100,000. It will henceforth be called the "Lincoln Temple," and will be used as the "Rooms" of the above Association. During the military occupation of the theatre, a large number of articles were carried off by morbid curiosity seekers.
The colored troops quartered in the vicinity of St. Louis have, it is said, contributed $70,000 to aid in the erection in Washington of a monument to the memory of President Lincoln.
It is anticipated that the emigration to the United States this year will amount to at least 200,000. Agents of a Scotch Emigration Society are in Washington for the purpose of investing in Southern lands, if sufficient inducements are offered. Hitherto emigration has been from the more northern and central countries of Europe; but the opening of the South to free labor can hardly fail to attract large numbers from the more southern portions of the old world.
MISCELLANEOUS. - The daily expenditures of the American Government during the past year amounted to $1,200,000...The Bureau of Emigration reports a falling off in the number of arrivals of over 20,000 as compared with the corresponding season of last year...It is said the emigration of Mormons from Europe will be greater the coming summer than ever before...Another lake has been discovered in Central Africa, whence the river Nile issues...Between Italy and the Pope negotiations are absolutely broken off. The Austrian Minister at Rome is charged with activity in procuring a misunderstanding.
Wreck of the Brother Jonathan.
This is another of those terrible accidents which so frequently happens in American travel. The Brother Jonathan was a steam packet between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon Territory. She was on her up trip, and struck on a sunken rock off Lincoln, near Crescent city, about 1 1/2 P.M. of July 10th.
Her crew and officers numbered 54 men; the passengers, including children, numbered 109, so far as known. Two boats swamped along side, three were left on the steamer. Only one boat escaped, carrying 16 adults and two children. Twelve of the these sixteen were connected with the vessel, the rest were females, a fact that speaks most significantly as to who stand the best chance of the boats in case of such accidents on the most of our ships. The vessel lay forty-five minutes before sinking, yet so far as known, the above number were all who escaped.
Brig. Gen. Wright was on board with his family and staff. The last that was seen of him, he was standing on board, holding a life-preserver. He had been recently appointed to the Department of the Columbia.
It is to be hoped that the other boats escaped, notwithstanding the above statements. Three-quarters of an hour was time enough to have allowed more than 16 to escape. When will the law see to it that greater care is taken?
This case of the Brother Jonathan should induce to look near home. Should an accident happen to the Kilauea while distant from land, the loss of life will be terrible.
