THE NEWS.
The following are the principal points of the news. On Sunday, the 2d of April, Gen Grant broke the rebel lines in front of Petersburg, capturing several forces, and at the same time took the Southside Railroad west of the city. That afternoon Jeff. Davis and other members of the rebel government fled by railroad to Danville, to which place they had previously moved the gold and silver in the Richmond banks, besides great quantities of ammunition, machinery, etc. The rebel army set fire to the ware houses, depots and bridges, as they did at Charleston, so that $10,000,000 worth of p\roperty was consumed, and blew up their iron-clads and gunboats, before evacuating.
Gen. Grant's army moved in early the next morning, but did not delay a moment. They marched straight for Burkesville Junction, where the Lynchburg and Danville roads intersect, fifty-two miles west of Petersburg. Sheridan with his magnificent cavalry pressed the rebels hard in their retreat, capturing great numbers of prisoners, guns and wagons, and at length on the 4th, planted himself between them and Lynchburg at a point north of Burkesville Junction. Grant, on hearing of it, marched all night, and reached Burkesville Junction ahead of Lee. Having completely cut off his retreat, and having routed and captured part of his army on the 6th he wrote to Lee on the 7th, summoning him to surrender. After considerable correspondence, Lee finally surrendered his army to Gen. Grant on the 9th. The whole army was paroled as at Vicksburg and allowed to return to their homes. It may well be doubted whether Gen. Johnston will continue the contest in North Carolina. If he does, his destruction is certain.
Mobile.
Gen. Canby's army was moving against Mobile, from the east side of the bay. They were on the 31st of March, beginning a strong fort on Spanish Point, at the mouth of the Tensas river. It was reported that Gen. Thomas' cavalry had taken Selma, Alabama, at the head of steam-boat navigator on the Alabama river, and the most important town, next to Mobile, remaining to the rebels.
