KA LEO O KA LAHUI.

"E Mau ke Ea o ka Aina i ka Pono."

Cheap Indignation

In last Friday's "Advertiser"," an "indignant citizen," [it would have been more manly for him to sign his respectable (?) name], warms up against the decision of the Supreme Court in the matter of the ministerial conflict, and he wonders how the Judges could arrive at their conclusion, supporting his assumption by a comparison between the texts of old article 41 and new article 42 or our constitutions. But "indignant citizen" very conveniently ignores the only true point of the discussion, and a very material fact to boot viz:, that those two articles have no bearing whatever on the know of the situation. It is plainly admitted by all here, Supreme Court included that according to our latest constitution, when once our Sovereign has appointed his Cabinet, the Ministers can afterwards only be removed through the Legislature. But neither the new nor the old constitutions say anything about the right, or otherwise, of a new Sovereign to select his advisers and appoint his first Cabinet at the start of a new reign; and to any person, not a sore-head as "Indignant Cit" evidently is,-the opinion of the Supreme Court must appear the impartial one, until a special article of amendment be introduced in out constitution, stating that the new Sovereign must keep and re-commission the ministers of his predecessor. Such an amendment would be an injustice, but it would be law according to "Indignant Citizen's heart". As it is, in our iron-clad Constitution our Sovereign still has the right of choosing his new ministry, when a change is required by the Legislature; yet according to our "indignant" discontents, that right ought to be refused to a new sovereign. Well now, while you may freaky approve of the law that obliges our kinds to keep their ministers after they once appointed them, yet, Mr. "Indignant C.", you cannot justly thrust the choice of a dead monarch on his successor! Be logical then before you give vent to foolish "indignation" and recklessly attack the only legal authority that we have here above partizan spite, and whose decisions in the two critical questions, of the "veto" and of the new sovereign's rights, will go down to posterity as models of calm and sane argumentation.
