KA LEO O KA LAHUI.
"E Mau ke Ea o ka Aina i ka Pono."
Telephonic News.
We hear that his Ex. the Minister of Forign Affairs heads the list of name to the roll of the Native Sons of Hawaii. We congratulate the Natives of "Hawaii" thus capped, because his Exceliency is a valuable crystaline to be attached to any association, and if they are as fittingly coated, booted and spurred as a body, as they are capped, they will unquestionably be an ornament to any country as an association or club. The only defect we find with the club is its initial start, in calico on New Yearʻs eve, when they should have made a more natural appearance. To be sure, we have heard of asses assembling, in lions covering, but never in crinoline or calico; but perhaps the age of asinine attractions has given place to calico influence.
A sound and just opposition to a government is a help to it, and should be courted without any fear; good statesmanship and free journalism should encourage it. In this respect we regret to see some of our leading journals take up a spirit of censure and condemnation, because an individual dares to criticise the action of the administration in what is plainly an injustice to more than one competitor to a piece of public property. We think with the correspondent alluded to, in his statement about the granting of a lease to Hon. W. H. Cornwall, that the Commissioners of Crown Lands, in justice to their pretensions to honesty and as a duty to their trust, should put up all public lands to public competition, more especially when there are more than one competitor. The action of administrators to public lands and other trusts, contravenes the spirit of our boasted rebel constitution, where an article in it is placed there to debar favoriteism and collusion. But the application of the law will probably always be used to discriminate against Hawaiian legislators, and English journalism support large bonuses and exclusive privileges to foreign corporations composed of most of the foreign members of the Legislature. It is the old story of the farmerʻs bulls, it all depends, on the color of the two which is right and which is wrong.
