KA LEO O KA LAHUI.
"E Mau ke Ea o ka Aina i ka Pono."
Something New.
The Princess Regent has a new constitution under review, which was not drawn up by Messrs, Wilcox, Bush nor Marques. This possibly, may have had something to do with the present Cabinet scare.
Telephonic News.
Hon R. W. Wilcox’s has scored his first victory over the present government by a bull run scare. We always felt that the rarified mental make-up of the Cabinet would subject them to an easy scare.
The lease of Waimanalo is said to be is about the same position as that of Prophet’s coffin, between Heaven and Sheol. That of lands in Maui is completed to Hon. Guii@amo, the future Lorillard of Pacific who proposes to raise buffalo chips for chewing and smoking.
We also hear that a combination is negotiating to purchace the steamer Akamai, and reconstruct her so as to be able to steam under water as well as sail over the surface of the ocean. When she is perfected she is to be named the Flying Duchman, in view of anticipated phantom-like movements.
The only transaction of consequence in real estate is the reported negotiations now pending between David Laamea, Old Croesus, and Uncle Samuel. The difficulty in the transfer appears to be in the illegitimacy of the sale without the consent of the live stock belonging to the farm.
Since the war movement under authority of the Police Department the quotations in manufactured opium has reached a trifle over $70 @lb or $140,000 a ton. The wonderful stride and upward tendency in the price of this article has broke down all the barriers of discretion and destroyed nearly all vestige of morality in the community- sinners and saints vieing alike in the struggle to obtain a portion of the profits of the business, which outshines the weath of Ali Barber’s cave or Aladdin’s Lamp.
In consequence of the immense profits in the opium business, which throws alcohol in the shade and sugar under a cloud, the shipping business has received its share of prosperity. We note the purchase of an old yawl boat by a firm of ranchmen in Koolaupoko, which is being fitted up with a strong net for a drag and also with a diving suit or two. A Chinese trader of the firm of Ah C & Ah C, we hear has joined the trio of ranchmen in the enterprise, and old Long John the Chinese opium smuggler of Hilo notoriety will probably be employed as Captain of the vessel. We also know of large offers for second-hand steam crafts.
