8, 9—HANAKAULUNA and HANAKALAUAI These two stars are north of Aikanaka. It is said when these stars rise in the east, pestilence, storm and other calamities would visit the islands. 10 AIKANAKA. This star is south ot the star Hanakauluna It was so called in honor ot the son of Hulumanailani (k) and Hinamaikalani (u). Aikanaka, was grandfather of Iwikauikaua, a high chief. 11. Keawe. This staris south of the star known as Hua (@) Its name is from Keawenui-a-Unu, one of the ancient Kings of the island of Hawaii. 12, 13 The stars MAKAHA and MAKOHILANI These two stars are near the Huhui or Pleiades. It is said that they are patrons of murderers, thieves, &c, &c. 14 Maui This star is south of the star Kana (Kane) near the Huhui or Pleiades. This is an important siar to Maui astrologers. The island of Maui is the only island in the whole Hawaiian archipelago honored among the heavenly bodies. 15 The stars of MAKALII In this group, there are 7 stars. There is one large star in the center, and a set of three stars forming a triangle on one side and also on the other composed of stars in this group. FIGURE 7 The stars of Makalii
