MAYOR GEORGE FRED WRIGHT REVEALS HIS FIRM CONVERSION TO PRINCIPLES OF PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT'S NEW DEAL

Advocacy of Works Expenditures 6f $2,000,000 on Oahu Alone Mean» Only Adopting Natfona! Admim3tration Program to Honolulu While Reput>!ican "Sftooge»" Attack Identical Program

Whiie political "stooges" of the Eepublicsn party in Hawaii such as ex-Judge William B. Lymer ānd ex-Judge Char!es S. Davis have heen sharp-shooting ineffective!>' recently āgaJnst the workings of the present Bemocratic naiional adminUtration, at so-caiied "r.egisteration" meetings on Oahu, Mayor George Fred Wright, the standardbearer of the G.O.P. on this Island has quietly—and perhaps unwittingly—rbecome converted to the' policīes of President Fr.anklin Roosevett's New Deal. least that is the implication whieh ean be drawn from his strenuous advocacy of a public works program for Oahu whieh would 6ntail the expenditure of $10,000,000 during tbe next five years—or at the rate'of 12,00,(300' a year in the unlikely event that hels re-elected. Mayor Wright was derelict in his statement in that he did not inform the taxpayers of Oahu as to where he Is going to obtain those ten million dollars—whether bv adding to the present bonded indebtedness of the city and county or not. However, the source of the mythical and nebulous $10,000,000 of Mayor Wright's dream is beside the point» the important consideration being that an analysis of the mayhope reveals that he is converted to the same pnnciples as President Roosevelt, the principles on whieh the | main campaign attack of the Republicans, both in Hawaii \anā on the mainland, k aimed. Figure It Out For Your&e!f Oahu, on whieh Mayor Wright would spend $10,000,000 in the next five years, or at the rate of $2,000,000 a year, has a population of 216,861, according to the June 30, 1936, estimate of ihe Territorial Board of Health, The United States of America, according to the latest estimates available, has a population of more than ISO,000,000 or more than 599 times—roughly 600 times— the population of Oahu. In other words, if Mayor Wright envi s lons spending $2,000,000 a year on public improvements on Oaha only, the nalional adn\inistration—in this case that of ]President Roo»evelt—nvght well expect to spend 600 tWe» $2,000,000 oir $1*200,000,000—0n pujblic improvement* throughout the United States. Expenditures of this $1,200,000,000 throughout the United States would be justified uader Mayor Wrighrs" proposal to spend $2,000,000 on Oahu on the comparative populations only. The analysis does not take into eonsideration the fact that the natural resources of the United States are far greater thar 600 times the natural resources of Oahu. Nor does there etiter into this analv'sis the fact that some sections of the United been visited this year with disastrous floods in the eastern sjeeU&u and devastating drought and dust storms in the west/ for whieh hundreds of mjllUons of dollais are bein£ allotted by the national administration of Presldeht Roosevelt Oahu, fortunately, has been spared the loss occas?onsd by these ravages of nature. In oonnection with the dreani of Mayor Wright for public works of $2,000,000 amiualiy on Oalui alone,. and the consequent justiflable esperiditure—under t|iat standard-rof at least $1,200,000,000 annualli* ty the n&lionai admu>istration solely on the basU of the popuk.tion of Oahu compared \vith the population of the TTiiited States as a whole. it, should be noted that the amount allowed for ali relief activitie& such as the FERA, WPA* the CCC, slum and other agencies $1,425*000*000 year. " << Consistency, Thou Art A JeweT f īnāe^A** In fact Mayor Wright appears to have heeome so enaiuored of the President's New Deal that he has taken cre«iit pubiicly at. some of these purport-ed "registeration" meetings, on behatf of the incnmbent Kepuh'ioan administration for many of the pro]ecU wluoh h*\v heen conv I pleted or are under construction by the Federal R«lief Admmistration, now tht> Vork Frogress Adniuiistra*tion, whieh being financed t n part or in whole by Pmident Domocratio admh\fctvatu\nv Unfortunateb* for the poUtieal effect that the mavor &nd his advkors hoped that this swipin£ of the credtt for *bes« improvement-s would have, Frank H.
