The American Weekly For a day, at least, pretty Katherme Butler, of Pomona, Calif., was the most. "dated up" young woman in the co|intry. No one took the trouble to count the dates, but they totaled many hundred—and they were real dates, grown in fche fertile soil of eoaehella valley., The costume whleh Miss Butler ,wore, except for a bit of "foui).dation" whieh didn't show, ,was fashioned of hand-plcked dates selected from tiie biggest and best specimens of the season's crop. And the outfit created almost a& mueh interest at the Los Angeles county fair as the regal robes of the agricultural queen in whose entourage Miss Biitler was a charming maid of honor. Scanty as the, agriculture ensemble was, the wearer found the skirt noticeably heavy and she was glad, when ; the ".elaborate ceremonies ,were over, to change into her street clothes. No one actually put the skirt of dates on the scales, but it was estimfated that the skirt weighed between 12 and 15 pounds. The designer ol this striking outfit got his idea from thc popuiai' hula skirt of the Hawaiian Iglands.
