KUPULANI

New Project to help the Family

The Kamehameha Schools, Extension Education Division has begun a new program to help young Hawaiian families in pre—natal, infant care and education. This program, called Kupulani (Growing Skyward) has its first office in the Ko'olauloa area of Oahu (Kaawa to Pupukea). Headed by Heinne K. Kaaa> the office includes regular staff and field workers to provide information about rearing children, family life, preganancy, birth, parenthood and also about other community services available. Participating families are either visited at home, or meet at the center or even attend group activities with other young parents who have or are expecting their first or second child. It is the intent of the program to help assure that our younger children of Hawaiian ancestry maybe brought up in a manner of care that is beneficial to teh parents as well as the child. This is in keeping with the aims of Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate in providing "r.eaningful educational service. . . giving preference to children and youths ... to assist them in their efforts to develop their brightest potential as effective participants in contemporary society." If you are interested in participating or would like to know more abaut Kupulani - call 293-9066 or 8458493. The office is at 54-291 Kamehameha Highway (next to Hauula Kai Market) and across from the Hauula Shopping Center.
