On the 1976 voyage of Hokule'a twelve varieties of taro to Tahiti along with other food crops, a pig, chickens and a dog. These were gifts to be presented to the Tahitian people. On the return voyage to Hawaii one of the crew members brought eight Tahitian varieties of taro. One died from the funigation process and another was eaten by wild pigs after it had been planted. The survivors are showing a lot of promise. One of them is a yellow fleshed Mana taro while another seems to be the same variety called Maniniowali. A variety with a red ha seems to be one introduced from Tahiti under the name "Mana ura." The name refers to the V shaped red mark on the tpp side of the leaf. It is reported that this new voyage of Hokule'a, the crevv members will be taking seeds and seedlings of plants we use for the constructīon of our canoes such as koa -wood and o?ona cordage fibers. It is not known exactly what our ancestors took with ihem 011 iheir voyages as gifts, for our traditional myths and legends do~not recount of any gifts being laken down. However, these seeds and seedlings when grown in the Bouth Pacific islands should be a wonderful means to strungthen the ties between the Hawaii and tht Pulyuesian peoples. .
