Lecture at Kamehameha.
The Hon. Fred W. Beckley gave a very interesting talk last Sunday evening to the young students of Kamehameha on "The Principle of Local Self-Government and the Formulation of Laws."
The young men paid marked attention during the whole of the discourse, and it was evident that they fully realized—perhaps for the first time—what glorious opportunities, as American citizens, for the progress and advancement of their own native land lie before them.
We congratulate the faculty of that institution in having the opportunity of hearing such a bright and prominent young Hawaiian leader, whose opinions, from practical experience, are well worthy of the consideration of the many embryo Hawaiian-American citizens that are now at Kamehameha, and who sooner or later will have to assume all the responsibilities of citizenship, which were so pointedly explained to them by one of their own countrymen.
If a series of lectures such as the Kamehameha boys had the good fortune to hear last Sunday were given from time to time in or public schools instead of the useless fads and notions that our mutual admiration Board of Education are having for the edification of our coming citizens, with what happy confidence would we look forward to the time when intelligence, progress and pure Americanism would be the watchwords of our body politic.
PACIFIC HEIGHTS.
Few cities in the world can boast of as many scenic attractions in the same area as Honolulu. Waikiki, Diamond Head and Kapiolani Park are but an hour from the center of town. Moanalua's magnificent landscape gardening is about the same distance. The world-renowned Nuuanu Pali is but an hour and a half from the harbor over a most attractive and excellent macadamized road.
The less accessible places, such as the head of Pauoa Valley and Pearl harbor, present sights well worth the trip, but the easiest, most comfortable and quickest way to see them all is to take a Pacific Heights electric car at the end of the Nuuanu tramway. It is safe to say that five cents never was able to give pleasure in the Hawaiian Islands as a nickel spent in a ride up to where Desky's powerful naval searchlight attracts attention of all the residents of the city.
By day or night the trip is equally delightful and the view excellent. Both day and night the cars are filled with those who want the benefit of the higher altitudes and purer atmosphere. The ravine between Nuuanu street and the foot of the heights is a revelation. The winding roadway up the heights proper is full of surprises. But the climax is reached when the car stops at the quaint Japanese teahouse at the upper end of the line. Here all kinds of temperance refreshments are served. By an easy footpath still further heights are accessible. From this point, Pearl Harbor spreads out as a map. Diamond Head cuts the sky on one side and Punchbowl's dishy slopes lie many feet below. In the other direction the incomparable coloring of the sky where they meet the peaks of the mountains at the head of Pauoa Valley and Nuuanu Valley make a picture no painter nas ever been able to accurately reproduce.
A residence on such a spot is an incomparable boon to any city, and to tropical Honolulu it is almost the "seventh heaven" in the Paradise of the Pacific.
