STEADY STREAM OF OBJECTION AGAINST GOVERNOR DOLE
Quiet But Decided Intimation Coming to Resign
Judge Estee Can Have the Place If He Will Ask For It--Little s Name Frequently Recommended-Dnited States Senator Positive That a Change is Pending,
[SPECIAL CORRESPONDENCE OF THE REPUBLICAN. WASHINGTON. Dec. 30.—" There is such a steady and energetic stream of objections against Gov. Dole of Hawaii." said a prominent Senator yesterday, "that I shouldn't be surprised if there would be a change soon. In fact. I look for it. Gov. D;le. from all that I can learn from my correspondents in Honolulu, had a hard time coming down from President of a Republic to Governor of a little Territory. He does not fit his job. I gather that on account of the constant friction and tumult in Hawaii, in a political way. the President has about decided that a change is desirable. Though there are strong charges against the Governor in some of the letters, the chances are almost certain that they will not be published or be admitted to have weight in making the change. Gov. Dole will simply resign, in response to a quiet but decided intimation, and his successor will be aopointed. ■ Who that successor will be is more than I know. Judge Little is frequently recommended, and seems to stand well in the islands. Judge Estee could have the place still, if he would ask for it. but he reiterates to me in a recent letter that he will not have it. His tastes are toward the bench, and while I think he ought to take the Governorship, merely to turn the tables on Dole. Estee does not look at it that way. You kno-w Dole treated Estee very shabbily when the Judge first went to the islands. He did not call on Mm, nor send greetings. It was only another proof that Dole still regarded himself ’King ot the Cannibal Islands.’ Don’t quote my name, but you ca 4 say with reasonable assurance that a change is pending." WALTER E. CLARK.
