GERMANS HELP THEIR INDIGENT FELLOW CITIZENS

Th’’ work accomplished by the G rman Benevolent Society of the Ha*a iian Islands was clearly set forth at the annual meeting held yesterday afternoon at the offb e of H Hackfeid Company. The organization has many good deeds to its score since its inception in these Islands, and has proven a t»oon to the indigent and unfortunate of German birth who have at some time been compelled to s.-ek friendly administration and aid from the ben evolent society. Tarty Years’ Work. Actual work was begun In the year ISkO. For some years following the Benevolent Society was allowed to drop and the work to languish. During the early part of 1879 interest in it was again revived, and until 1890. when the organization was duly Incorporated. the labor progressed at a fairly progressive rpte. 1 The society is now established on a , firm foundation. Notwithstanding the fact that, during the past year the r<“celpts outside of the donation? were a trifle less than the expenses, th--report of the treasurer showed a flat tering cash balance. Some Liberal Donations. Donations of sr>oo from Mrs Irvin" $lOO from H. J }»'oite. and from Paul Isenberg were received during the year. The tuition of a young lady at St Andrew's priory is paid by t),- - cietyThe German Benevolent Society af filiated with the Associated Charities about a year ago. By so doing the »■>- ciety is believed to have saved about $3OO. The work of Mrs E. T Berger was warmly commented upon by the directors of the society. New Officer* Elected. In the annual election of officers the following were chosen: President. F. \ Schaefer; vice president A -ter der Isenberg: treasurer. F Freniius. secretary. J. F. Kckhardt: auditor. H. J. Nolle, and trustee. H. Schultz* Mr. Schultz**, the retiring treasurer has been associated with the society since 1895. He declined re-election yesterday owing to a pressure of business matters. J. T Hackfeld also asked permission to be relieved from farther duties as an office bolder owing to his non-residence in Honolulu a portion of the time.
