The island is part of 1 the Bismark group, between New 1 j Zoaland and New Meclenburg. ■ The “Empire” covers just seven ■ square roiles (German), and was 1 pnrchased, dnring the eighties, 1 ' by Herr Georg Weisser, a retired 1 paymaster of the German navy, ■ and afterward director of tbe New Gninea Company. Herr Weisser had several bloody fights with his Samoan and Kanaka chiefs. but managed 1 to quell all rebellions and be- ' eame very popnlar with his sub5 jects.
