In 16S4 the King of Siam sent to Louia XIV. an embassy, the pomp of whieh has remained famous. TheKing received it with proper erlnt and accepted tiie presents sent lo him. Amongst them were two small eannona inlaid with silver whieh were plaeeel in the Garde Meuhle, whieh then occupied the site now occupie<i by the Ministry of Marine. On the 14th July, 1780, the people, before running to the Bastille, pillage«l the Garde Meuhle, taking away the Siamese eannon, and it waa the-<e that prineipally contributed to the forcing of the doors of the State prison.
